Why Substrate Co
The Practical Case for Independent Benchmarking
Hardware decisions made on vendor-supplied figures carry risk. Here is a clear account of what distinguishes our approach and why it produces more useful data for your team.

Six Reasons Teams Choose Substrate Co
No Commercial Stake
We earn nothing from hardware or cloud referrals. Our findings are not weighted by vendor relationships.
Every Figure Documented
Method notes accompany every result. You know exactly what conditions produced the number you are reading.
Your Workloads, Not Ours
Benchmarks are built around your inference or training tasks. Synthetic suites are not a substitute.
Repeatable Templates
You keep the benchmark template. Re-run it independently when options change without engaging us again.
Side-by-Side Results
Comparison frames let you read figures directly. No summary that pre-decides the outcome on your behalf.
Plain Deliverables
Reports are written for engineering leads, not executive summaries that obscure the numbers underneath.
In Depth
Each Benefit Examined
Professional Expertise in AI Hardware Measurement
Our team has spent years working with AI infrastructure in production environments before forming Substrate Co. This means we understand failure modes in benchmark design — warm-up underestimation, memory locality effects, batch size sensitivity — and we build procedures that account for them rather than ignore them.
We keep current with hardware releases and software stack changes, including driver updates and framework-level optimisations that affect measured throughput. Expertise here is not a background credential; it is the reason the method notes are useful rather than decorative.
Up-to-Date Benchmarking Practice
AI accelerator hardware and the software stacks that run on it move quickly. A benchmark procedure designed for last year's models and drivers may not produce meaningful results this year. Our procedures are reviewed and updated as the landscape shifts.
This is particularly relevant for the Advisory Retainer service, where the living method library is designed to stay current over a three-month engagement — rather than becoming stale documentation from a one-time study.
Responsive, Considered Engagement
We keep engagement sizes manageable. When you contact Substrate Co, you are working with the people who will run the benchmarks, not a support layer that escalates internally. Scoping discussions are direct, and deliverables are reviewed with you rather than sent and forgotten.
Questions about methodology — before, during, or after an engagement — receive considered answers. We do not treat method discussion as out of scope.
Clear Pricing, Defined Scope
All three services have published prices in Ringgit Malaysia. The scope of each engagement is defined before work begins, and we do not add deliverables without agreement. The Benchmark Setup starts at RM 620, the Comparative Study at RM 1,510, and the Advisory Retainer at RM 3,020 for three months.
There are no hidden fees. If a piece of work falls outside the agreed scope, we flag it and discuss whether to extend or defer it, rather than billing after the fact.
Results That Survive Scrutiny
A benchmark result is only as useful as it is defensible. If a procurement decision is later questioned, the method note should be able to answer the question. We write our documentation with that standard in mind.
The datasets we deliver are structured for further analysis. If your team wants to slice the results differently or run their own visualisations, the underlying figures support that without additional processing on our end.
How We Compare
Substrate Co vs Typical Alternatives
| Consideration | Substrate Co | Typical Alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor independence | No hardware or cloud relationships | Often vendor-funded or affiliated |
| Method documentation | Method note with every result | Methodology rarely shared in full |
| Workload source | Your actual tasks | Synthetic suites or vendor samples |
| Reproducibility | Template yours to keep and re-run | Procedures rarely handed over |
| Declared caveats | Explicitly stated in report | Limitations often understated |
| Pricing transparency | Published rates in RM | Varies; often quote-only |
What Makes Us Different
Distinctive Features of Our Practice
The Method Note Format
Every chart and figure in our deliverables is accompanied by a plain-language explanation of how it was produced. This panel — we call it the method note — covers assumptions, warm-up, precision, and any conditions that may limit generalisability. It is a standard part of every report, not an optional appendix.
The Comparison Frame
Results across configurations are shown in a structured side-by-side layout with consistent axes and labels. The format is designed so your team can read the data directly, rather than through a narrative layer that has already done the interpretation for them.
The Living Method Library
For advisory retainer clients, we maintain a library of benchmark procedures that evolves with your workloads and the hardware options you evaluate. Unlike a one-time report, the library remains accurate when software versions change or new configurations enter scope.
Scoped, Named Deliverables
Each service has a defined output: a benchmark plan and reporting outline; a results dataset and method note; or a method library and review notes. You know what you are receiving before the engagement begins, and we deliver precisely that.
